New Montreal Impact signing Alessandro Nesta (TVA Sports)
So the Montreal Impact have staged a bit of a coup, signing former Italian International and AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta. The club did not release official details of the deal, but it is believed to be an 18 month deal. However, MLSsoccer.com is reporting that he will NOT be a designated player.
The 36 year old defender has played his entire career in his native Italy, including winning the FIFA World Cup in 2006 with the Italian National team. He has also won the Serie A title, the UEFA Champions League, the Coppa Italia, and the FIFA Club World Cup while on duty with AC Milan.
Downside for the Impact, he's 36 years old. Serious back injuries nearly forced his retirement a few years back. Last season he only made 17 appearances in Serie A for Milan, along with 7 appearances in the UEFA Champions League. It will be interesting to see how he can hold up over the course of the MLS season, with the artificial turf at some venues and the extensive travel. However, there is no question that he will add some veteran leadership to the Impact.
