Mexico Match Thoughts: Pachuca vs. America

So far I hadn't caught a match featuring either of these two teams during Apertura 2011, so I was keen to take in this one and cross them both off the list, or if you prefer, add the tags to my blog.

America came into the match on 8 points, Pachuca with 7. Obviously they were hoping to ride their home crowd past America and further up the table.

Pachuca really came out on the front foot, with a lot of attacking and possession. Honestly it seemed to me throughout the whole first half that the heads of the America players just weren't in the match. I don't speak much Spanish, so I don't know if the announcers would have validated it, but that's what it looked like to me.

In fact, Pachuca had all the chances in the first half as America failed to register a shot, leaving Calero lonely in the Pachuca goal. His friends made feel better though, particularly Felix Borja. In the 16th minute he took a gorgeous through ball and went on an angle in the back of the net to give Pachuca the 1-0 lead. Then he pulled a Lucha Libre mask from his sock and wore it in celebration, for which he got a yellow card. Great celebration though. It would be the only goal Pachuca would need and they led 1-0 at half time.

Whatever America's coach said to them at half time seemed to work. They came out much more aggressive. Not on fire mind you, but they finally looked like they wanted to play the match. They carved out two or three good chances in the opening 10 minutes, but Calero stood firm in goal for Pachuca.

In the 65th minute, Pachuca put the match away for good. Feliz Borja was again the man up to the task as he headed in a gorgeous long cross from Hernandez to make it 2-0. Then in the 78th minute, America really blew it as Valenzuela went into Edy Brambila with a nasty two footed challenge and received a red card. That ended any slim hope America had and Pachuca took the match by the 2-0 margin.

Arsenal Add 3, Maybe Out For More

Well it looks like Sunday's 8-2 thrashing at Old Trafford was enough for Arsene Wenger. The Gunners have opened their wallets here at the deadline and brought in three new players. They are:

Chu Young Park: From Monaco (F)
Andre Dos Santos: From Fenerbache (DF)
Per Mertesacker: From Werder Bremen (DF)

According to multiple sites, they are also in the hunt for Clint Dempsey, Christopher Samba, Yann M'Villa, and Marvin Martin. Thing of it is, I don't think even adding all those players would put them on the level of the two Manchester sides, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

Diego Forlan Joins Inter Milan

Last week Inter Milan, my favorite Serie A side, sold Samuel Eto'o to a Russian club for a whole ton of money. This kind of irked me, as Inter needs the firepower to keep up with AC Milan.

Well, they've reinvested some of that cash. Yesterday they announced that 2010 World Cup hero Diego Forlan will join the side from Atletico Madrid. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but I bet it was pretty hefty all around. Forlan didn't have a hugely stellar season last year in La Liga, but he can still be top class.

Only time will tell if this was a good move for Inter, who were also supposedly trying to pry Carlos Tevez from Man City.

EPL: Manchester United vs. Arsenal

Earlier this week, the Gunners took a big step in righting their ship for the season by finishing off Udinese in the Champions League qualifying round. However, they had to know this match at Old Trafford was going to be trouble. The other big event for Arsenal this week was completing the sell of Samir Nasri to Manchester City. Now with the Gunners fire sale all but over, they limped into Manchester on a short week and with very few players with Premier League credentials.

This would be total humiliation for Arsenal as United continued to impress and stay a step ahead of their cross town rivals in Sky Blue. Danny Welbeck got United on the board in the 22nd minute by ditching the Arsenal defense and scoring a header. Still all was not lost for the Gunners who earned a PK in 27th, only to have David De Gea turn aside a less than stellar penalty kick from Robin Van Persie. It was a great moment for the new United net minder.

It didn't take long for United to capitalize on Arsenal's failure to equalize. About a minute later Ashley Young made it 2-0 with a great goal from outside the 18. Ouch. It got worse too. In the 41st minute Wayne Rooney knocked a home a gorgeous free kick effort to make it 3-0. Theo Walcott nutmegged De Gea right on the stroke of half time to make it 3-1 at the interval.

The Walcott goal should have given Arsenal some momentum going into the 2nd half, but United put the game away fairly quickly. Rooney scored yet another beautiful free kick in the 64th, Nani added another strike in the 67th, and JS Park made it 6-1 with a goal in the 70th. Not a good time for the traveling Arsenal fans, but the game had three more goals to go.

Van Persie picked up the first in the 74th with a rather lucky strike at the United goal to make it 6-2. Hardly a consolation with neither side really bothering to play much defense. In the 82nd minute Rooney got his hat trick from the spot after Walcott took down Patrice Evra in the area. Ashley Cole rounded out the scoring in stoppage time, another laser, to make it 8-2 on full time. Arsenal would go limping back to London in disgrace.

This was just the fourth ever EPL match to feature 10 goals. It was also Arsenal's worse loss under Wenger, and the first time since 1897 that they have given up 8 goals in a match. If they can't make some moves in the next couple days, it's going to be a long season.

George John Will Not Be Joining Blackburn

Despite rumors that a deal between MLS/FC Dallas and Blackburn Rovers was all but done for defender George John, it looks like the deal is off. No official reasoning was given for the break down, but it's possible John could not come to personal terms with Rovers.

John had been in Europe trying to finalize Greek citizenship and hammer out the details for a move to England. Now he will return to FC Dallas, who he has refused to resign for.

EPL: Blackburn vs. Everton

So what does one say about this match? It was sloppy, it was often ugly, and both clubs REALLY needed the points. Blackburn came into the match at 0 points, hoping to get on track at home. Everton lost their opener to QPR last weekend and were also on 0 with their first match against Spurs being postponed.

In the first half, nothing happened. Both teams had chances and blew them. Late in the first half the football got ugly as the teams got desperate. The half ended scoreless.

The story of the second half was penalty kicks. Blackburn had 2 and Everton had 1. Blackburn got their first right after half time as Ross Barkley brought down Formica after turning ball over. However, Howard saved the PK and score remained 0-0. They got another chance in the 83rd minute. Formica was causing problems in the area again and this time Jagielka brought him down. Once again Blackburn screwed up as Formica hit the post on the PK.

Everton got their chance in stoppage time. Chris Samba looked to have fouled Fellaini in the box. Looked a bit soft to me. Anyway, Arteta did NOT miss from the spot and earned the Toffees a 0-1 win. Three crucial points on the road and a nice match from Tim Howard.

EPL: Chelsea vs. Norwich.

Even as a Chelsea fan I have to admit, the final score line in this match was a little misleading. I think Norwich deserves a lot of credit for the way they've started this season. They play HARD.

Chelsea came out to a blistering start in a surprise 4-4-2 formation. Villas-Boas elected to pair Drogba and Torres up top instead of going with the 4-3-3 that Chelsea has sported. I think it was a great call. Bosingwa and Cole came up in awesome attacking roles, and Bosingwa was right in the action all night. In fact, he gave the Blues a goal with a laser shot in the 6th minute, 1-0 to the home side.

For the next few minutes, Chelsea continued to dominate, but around the 20th minute, Norwich got their feet under them. They forced several saves from Hilario and really tested the Chelsea back line. John Terry mixed it up with Holt all day. It became obvious that it wasn't going to be the walk in the park us Chelsea fans hoped for. Still, Frank Lampard just missed another goal for Chelsea right before half. The Blues led at the interval 1-0.

Villas-Boas must have rallied the troops at half time, because Chelsea was the stronger team for most of the second half. However, Norwich got their chance and the made the most of it. In the 63rd, Hilario and Ivanovic collided in the area for Chelsea and Holt hit the back of the net to tie it at 1-1. It got worse for Chelsea just minutes later as Drogba collided with the Norwich keeper and looked to be out cold. He was stretchered off and things looked kind of bleak.

After a lengthy stoppage to treat Drogba, Juan Mata and Nicholas Anelka checked in and Chelsea took control of the match. Finally. In the 80th minute Ruddy brought down Ramires in the box and got a red card for his trouble. The Canaries sent in their back up keeper, but he couldn't stop Lampard's PK, and it was 2-1 to Chelsea. The Blues added a cosmetic goal from Mata in the 11th minute of stoppage time to make 3-1 at full time.

Drogba was released from a London hospital last night, no word on how long he will be out. Lukaku made his Chelsea debut and looked pretty good. Before Drogba went down, he and Torres were starting to find the formula. Maybe Mata can unlock the Torres goals.

Match Thoughts: Portland Timbers vs. Chivas USA

I actually wasn't going to watch any soccer tonight. Weird, I know. I had a long day at work, I'm VERY frustrated with a lot of things right now, and I knew if I tried to watch I wouldn't enjoy it as usual. Then I saw the MLS midweek match was a late start, and as I haven't any MLS for a couple of weeks, I thought I'd give it a shot.

This match was very important in terms of the playoff picture. Both Chivas and Portland are on the outside looking in, but just barely. Portland would leap frog the Goats with a win in this one.

Knowing this, Portland came out on fire, and left Chivas in the dust. Robin Fraser had two use two first half subs as his players were dropping like flies. The Timbers had a number of good chances, but Kennedy was a wall in goal for Chivas. Finally late in the half Brunner got his head on a corner and scored, putting Portland up 1-0.

Still, Chivas knew they would have chances. After all, Portland has the second worst defense in the conference. The Goats put Perkins under pressure throughout the second half, but they just couldn't get it done. They had one shining chance though. Right at the end of stoppage time, the ball fell in the 6 for Courtois. Perkins was on the wrong post, and all the Frenchman had to do was tap it in. Unfortunately, he tried to switch feet and inexplicably hit the ball wide, sealing his team's defeat in heart-breaking fashion.

Ouch.

Fenerbache Withdrawn from UCL

UEFA announced today that Turkish Champion Fenerbache has been withdrawn from the Champions League. This comes as a result of a match-fixing allegation, suggesting that some of the matches which lead them to the title last year may have been fixed. At this stage, the investigation is ongoing. However, UEFA had already threatened to kick them out of the league and void all of their results if the charges proved true.

The action came from the Turkish FA itself. UEFA has not announced how they will replace Fenerbache yet, even though the group stage draw is tomorrow.

UCL: FC Zurich vs. Bayern Munich

So if you read my match blog about the Bayern vs. Zurich tie from last week, you know I had high hopes about this leg. I was hoping that back in front of their home support, Zurich would put up a fight.

Well, that didn't happen.

Bayern iced it early. Mario Gomez, who missed so many chances last week, iced it early on in this one. In the 7th minute, Bayern came up the field with a nice looking counter attack. Gomez got on the ball and calmly dispatched the Zurich 'keeper to make 0-1 and 0-3 on aggregate.

Seriously folks, that's all she wrote. After that, Bayern kicked the ball around a lot and Zurich looked positively frightened of the ball.

Needless to say, Bayern will advance to the Champions League group stage and Zurich will take their, um, "game" to the Europa League. Maybe there the competition won't dwarf them. Lame.

Mexico Match Thoughts: Cruz Azul vs. Tijuana

So as I'm trying to decide which Mexican Primera Division club to support, and Cruz is one of the front runners. Mostly because of two things. One, I've seen them play live, which is pretty cool, and two I like their style and the buzz around their stadium.

For this match, they geared up for Tijuana. The Perro Rojinegros came into the match hoping for some kind of result from Estadio Azul to move away from the bottom of the table.

For awhile it looked like they might get their way. If I'm honest with you, it wasn't that exciting of a match to watch. Much of the first half was spent in the midfield for both clubs, and good chances seemed few and far between.

Tijuana did make the most of their big chance though. Dayro Moreno was probably the most dangerous player for them the entire night. In the 22nd minute he got his head on the end of a gorgeous early cross and gave the keeper no chance. The ball rippled the back of the net to make 0-1 to the visitors.

Cruz came out more intent on protecting their turf in the second half. It didn't take them long to equalize. Edixon Perea headed in the tying goal in the 48th, and Emanuel Villa gave La Machina the lead for good in the 68th. Villa later earned his second yellow and was sent off in the 77th minute. Tijuana put the Azul goal under pressure in the final minutes, but couldn't convert. The match ended 2-1 to Cruz Azul.

The win puts Cruz in 3rd place behind Chivas and Pumas. The loss drops Tijuana to 15th with only Atlas, Morelia, and Atlante behind them at present.

EPL: Manchester United vs.Tottenham

Ok, now it's time to talk about the other team that had their opener called off because of the London riots: Tottenham. They were probably wishing they would have had a match under their belts before having to travel to Old Trafford to take on United. They're also having their share of internal troubles as well. Chelsea has been trying to buy Luka Modric all transfer season. Looks like Modric has had enough of Tottenham's refusal to sell him, as he didn't even make the trip to Manchester. Depending on which media report you read, either he's on strike or he's so pissed off that he's not in the state to play. Either way it's ugly. Peter Crouch wasn't in the squad either, fueling rumors that he might move before the end of the transfer window.

As for this match, Spurs gave United pretty much all they could handle for the first half. It was a pretty wide open game, with chances for both sides. Brad Friedel made his Tottenham debut and played pretty well for the most part. He made some great saves, particularly in the first half. David De Gea continued to look uncomfortable for United however. He made the saves, but more often than not spilled it back to the floor before finally getting a handle on things.

The first half ended without a goal, but Manchester United really ramped things up in the second half. Tottenham was not without their chances either. Lennon flat out didn't see Van der Vaart ALL ALONE in the 18, and ended up conceding a goal kick, causing the Dutchman to pull his jersey up over his head in disgust.

United's first goal came off the head of Danny Welbeck in the 61st minute as he got on the end of a Cleverley cross. Wasn't much Friedel could do about it. United would go on to get two more. In the 76th, Welbeck made a nifty back heel pass to Anderson, who hit the back of the net to make it 2-0. Wayne Rooney, looking super sharp in the early season, put the icing on the cake in the 87th as he headed in a cross from Ryan Giggs to finish out the scoring at 3-0.

The second half was glorious for United but a nightmare for Spurs. Sure, I'm biased as a Chelsea fan, but sell Modric already. He doesn't want to play there. Take the money from Chelsea and pick up a couple of guys before the end of the window. Although now Harry Redknapp is blasting Juan Mata for "just wanting the money" since it looks like Modric will end up at Chelsea anyway. Could be an interesting season for Spurs fans.

EPL: Everton vs. QPR

Well, my best friend Rick is an Everton supporter, so I usually kind of pull for them, unless they're playing Chelsea. This one had to hurt. QPR got beat up pretty bad by Bolton, and Everton's first match was postponed due to the London riots. The Toffees really looked like it was their first time on the pitch this season. Just poor.

There really isn't a lot to say from a match synopsis point of view. Everton started off well enough with some decent possession, but didn't manage to capitalize on any of the chances they managed to carve out. The usually reliable Tim Cahill just flat out missed on more than one chance, including a wide open header in the six.

QPR got all they needed in the 31st minute. They managed to find Tommy Smith standing virtually all alone in the Everton 18. Smith easily slotted the goal past a stunned Tim Howard to make it 0-1.

Unfortunately for the Everton supporters, it only got more frustrating in the second half, as the play got worse. It honestly looked as if the players weren't trying to connect on passes, just kick the ball around. At another point, Ron Arteta had a disagreement with Baines on who would take a free kick. Baines had rattled the cross bar with a free kick in the first half, but Arteta won the argument, and missed quite badly. Later the fans took exception with David Moyes inserting Fellaini for Beckford, which left Cahill alone up top as a CF. Saha eventually checked in, but it was all to no avail, as QPR walked away from Goodison park with all three points.

It looks like it might be a long season for Everton, though Moyes is usually adept at getting the most out of what he's got. One wonders what he might be able to do if he had some money to bring in players.

Mexican Match Suspended After Gunfire Heard Outside of Stadium

Unfortunately the violence and problems facing Mexico came home to roost on it's futbol league Saturday night. The match between Santos and Morelia, at Santos' home stadium in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico was suspended after about 40 minutes when the obvious sound of gunfire was heard in the stadium.

Below is the live video via Azteca of the incident. The players and officials run off the pitch and into the tunnel. A few minutes later, as the shots continue to be heard, fans start to storm the pitch, also seeking cover and running away from the sound of the shots.

Torreon and Coahuila officials said that gunmen attacked a public security vehicle outside the stadium. One police officer was injured in the gun fight, but there no injuries reported in the stadium itself. Officials did not say who the gunmen were.

The match was still 0-0 at the time of the suspension.

Chelsea and Valencia Agree to Mata Deal.

All summer long Chelsea have been chasing Modric from Spurs to bolster their midfield. After all, we've got like almost every striker known to man. Well, Tottenham didn't want to sell him and risk slipping back to irrelevance, which they might do anyway.

So new coach Villas Boas decided to go the Spanish route. The Blues have agreed to terms with Valencia for the sale of Spanish International Juan Mata. The deal, subject to a medical, is rumored to be around 43 million dollars. The transfer appears to be imminent. I hope so!

Mata scored 8 goals for Valencia last year and is a product of the Real Madrid youth system.

Time will tell if this move ends the push for Modric.

UCL: Lyon vs. Rubin Kazan

My late night footy on the dvr last night was the Champions League qualifier between Lyon and Russian side Rubin Kazan. Rubin has made a name for themselves in Champions League play the last couple of years, including a win over Barca at Camp Nou two years ago.

Kazan got off a dream start though. By the third minute, they were already on their second corner of the night. Vladimir Dyadyun went unmarked and headed home the second one far post, which Lyon had left uncovered. The French team and crowd was stunned. Rubin fought hard the entire match, and gave Lyon all they could handle.

A lot of credit has to go to Lyon though. They really didn't let the goal phase them long term. Both Bastos and Gomis had excellent nights. In the 7th minute, Bastos just barely missed on a free kick, and Gomis equalized in the 10th. He volleyed home a brilliant early cross from Bastos and we were level at 1-1.

Lyon went further on the attack throughout the rest of the half. Lisandro, Gomis, and Bastos all had great chances. In the 40th minute, Gomis hit a shot in toward the goal and it was deflected in for an own goal by Kverkvelia. Lyon took the 2-1 lead into the half time break.

Both Rubin and Lyon put up a hell of a fight in the second half. Lloris made several big saves to keep Rubin from getting a second away goal. In the 71st minute, Briand managed to flick in a corner kick for Lyon to give them the 3-1 advantage, which they took the rest of the way.

Lyon played pretty well despite getting a great shot from Rubin. They were certainly more impressive than either Arsenal or Bayern Munich. However, they did give up the away goal, which keeps Rubin alive for the return leg next week.

CONCACAF Champions League: Colorado Rapids vs. Isidro Metapan

Last night the defending MLS Cup Champion Colorado Rapids opened their CONCACAF Champions League Group Stage play against Metapan of El Salvador. The Rapids made the mistake of referring to Metapan publicly as "the worst team in the group" and fielded a weaker 11.

It very nearly came back to bite them on the ass. Just a few touches after kickoff, Drew Moor took down Alan Kardeck in the 18 and conceded a PK. For my money, it should have been a red card. However, the ref was lenient and only showed the Rapids defender a yellow. Kardeck iced the PK to make it 0-1 to Metapan. It was just the start of a night full of drama.

Colorado was able to respond though, despite some sloppy play on both sides of the ball. In the 15th minute, Colorado had one of their first good spells of possession and it ended up with a nice goal by Mac Kandji to equalize at 1-1. It was great to see Kandji finally back off an ACL injury and playing footy again.

However, the lead only lasted about 9 minutes for the Rapids, who continued to be plagued by defensive blunders and miscues. The next came from 'keeper Matt Pickens. In the 24th minute, Pickens went down under a challenge, got right back up, and tried to start the Colorado offense with a little roll out. I don't know if he didn't see Rodolfo Suarez lurking for Metapan, but Suarez easily picked off the pass and chipped an embarrassing goal over Pickens to make it 1-2. Ouch.

Then a little later the major drama hit. Drew Moor appeared to take down a Metapan player in the box for a second PK. The foul and PK was called by the far side AR, and the ref pointed to the spot. Replays showed very little, if any, contact on the part of Moor, it was obvious that the "foul" was actually a dive. After a few minutes, the ref reversed the call, but not on the grounds that it was a dive, but that the play was offside, which it certainly wasn't. The ref was Rocky Mountain High if you ask me. Then in the 40th minute, Kardeck was caught with a forearm in the area of Moor's head. I think there was contact, but this time it was the Rapids player who went down in sniper shot fashion. The ref brandished a straight red card and the entire match was changed.

It didn't take the champs long to capitalize on the man advantage. Right before half time, Kandji scored again to equalize at 2-2. At the break, it looked like the only thing standing in the way of the Rapids was themselves.

Colorado didn't waste a ton of time taking the lead in half number 2. In the 49th minute Andre Akpan caught a fortunate bounce in front of goal and slotted it home to give Colorado a 3-2 lead. Despite a game and gutty performance from Metapan down the stretch, they weren't able to equalize and the Champs took home a 3-2 win.

EPL: Fulham vs. Aston Villa

So why did I watch this match again? Oh yeah, the EPL is one of my favorite things in the world. Hey nobody is right all the time. This match was a stinker. Even the announcers were talking crap on it at the end.

What is there to say about this one? Well, Fulham probably had the better chances. They really should have taken the lead early on. In the 10th minute, Riise found himself with a golden shot at a vulnerable Villa goal, but hit the shot over. Lame. Given made sure Fulham didn't capitalize on any other chances.

New signing N'Zogbia was about the only outfield player who showed up for Villa. He wasn't near enough on his own though. Sure it's an away point for Villa, but both the fans and controversial new coach Alex McLeish will have a nasty taste in their mouths after a lack luster effort.

In the end, no goals, no anything. Very few chances. Both of these clubs will need to play better as the season goes on. Hopefully for fans of both sides, it can be attributed to opening weekend jitters.

UCL: Bayern Munich vs. FC Zurich

The two cities of Munich and Zurich are only separated by about 150 miles. Zurich had a noisy contingent at the stadium in Munich, unfortunately, they didn't see much great football from either side.

What they saw was a battle played largely in midfield, with Munich getting chances and missing most of them. It certainly wasn't impressive at all.

That being said, Munich jumped on top in the early going. In the 8th minute, Arjen Robben sent a nice ball in that found Bastian Schweinsteiger. The German international calmly volleyed it home to give Munich the 1-0 lead.

Did Zurich have chances? Not really. They did get one header off a free kick late in the first half, but it was headed right in to the waiting hands of Bayern 'keeper Neuer. Maybe Bayern fans will start to think he's worth the price tag. At least they didn't get David De Gea.

The pattern of not much football continued in the second half. Every time Munich got a chance, they blew it. It started to look like Zurich would weather the storm for the most part. That changed late though, again coming off the foot of Arjen Robben. In the 72nd minute, the Bayern attacker slipped his marker near the top of the area and smacked the ball into the top corner far post to seal the 2-0 win for the German side.

All in all, 2 goals, no away goals conceded, it looks like job done for Munich. However, much like Arsenal, they failed to really play impressive football that would make them look like a possibility for going deep into the tournament. Zurich would have been better off not conceding the second goal, but the tie is far from over.

SKC 'Keeper Nielsen Hit In Head With Object From Stands

There was a scary moment at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in KC Wednesday night, despite the home team's 3-1 drubbing of the Portland Timbers. Shortly after Graham Zusi's 25th minute goal, an object was thrown from the stands and struck SKC 'keeper Jimmy Nielsen in the head.

Nielsen's hands went to his head and he was down on the pitch for approximately 4 minutes receiving attention. The object turned out to be a piece of an Omar Bravo Bobblehead doll, given away free at the stadium as part of a promotion.

Nielsen continued to play and looked to be ok. I really hope is. ESPN Soccernet is reporting that two individuals were taken into custody in connection with the incident. Lets hope these individuals were stupid goons, not actual MLS fans of either side. We don't need this in our game. It happens though, as unfortunately, I've seen several objects thrown onto the pitch at Rio Tinto as well. Grow up people.

CONCACAF Champions League: Seattle Sounders vs. Comunicaciones

So for the second straight season, Seattle Sounders successfully navigated the CONCACAF Qualifying round to get into the group stage proper. Last year they lost their group stage opener. They were looking to get off to a better start this year.

The opening minutes didn't quite work out that way. Seattle came out extremely sluggish, and if I had to say so, not really ready to play. Comunicaciones on the other hand came out sharp. They did something not a lot of MLS teams look to do against Seattle at home, attack. It paid off for them in just the game's second minute as Jairo Arreola smacked home a shot on a cross to Comuinicaciones into the lead 0-1.

Seattle and their home fans looked shocked. However, fear not, MLS fans, cause Seattle didn't let us down. It took them a little bit, but they got going and got going big time. Brad Evans headed in their first goal in the 35th minute. It was a reward for a solid 5-7 minutes of all out pressure on the Comunicaciones goal. The equalizer sent us to half time tied at 1-1.

The second half was pretty much all Seattle, but it wasn't without some bumpy moments. Lamar Neagle sent a boot to his opponent's stomach in the 55th that earned him a red card. However, the man disadvantage didn't seem to bother Seattle. Fucito scored two goals in the 60th and 67th minutes, respectively. They also got an own goal late to make the final score 4-1.

Despite the bad start, the strong finish gave Sounders an opening three points in group play. Nicely done.

UCL: Arsenal vs. Udinese

So it has been a bit of a weird and not altogether satisfying opening of the campaign for the Gunners and their fans. Their opening Premier League fixture was a draw to Newcastle, and resulted in two of their players getting 3 match bans for an altercation late in the match. Then, the sale of Captain Cesc Fabregas finally went through. To say Arsenal was in a bit of tumult was an understatement.

So they were hoping a Champions League qualifying round victory verses Udinese might be just the ticket to get their season going. Still, battling the Serie A side wasn't going to be easy. New Captain Robin Van Persie was serving a suspension for being sent off last year against Barca, and manager Arsene Wenger was serving a one match ban stemming from the same match.

Arsenal got off to a dream start, with Theo Walcott volleying a cross into the back of the net to give them a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute. It would prove to be the game's only goal. For the next 25 minutes or so, Arsenal continued the attack, but wasn't able to find the second.

Then things started to go downhill for them. Udinese got their feet under them and really started to take it to Arsenal. Antonio Di Natale, the leading scorer in Serie A the past two seasons, torched the Arsenal defense on several occasions. He had two great chances: one a free kick that hit the cross bar and the other denied by a reaction save from Sczczesny. Otherwise, Udinese might have been heading home with the advantage.

The final score proved to be 1-0. Arsenal got the win they needed, but Udinese really outplayed them for the majority of the match. Wenger should be troubled by his defensive miscues. For the Italians, they should be going home for the return leg with a lot of confidence. We'll see what happens next week.

EPL: West Brom vs. Manchester United

Despite claiming the EPL crown last year, Manchester United struggled quite a bit on the road, drawing 10 of 19 fixtures away from Old Trafford. Sir Alex would be looking to rectify that this season, and it didn't take long.

United looked to be in complete control right from the opening minutes. The Baggies didn't look like they had much to offer in resistance. However, despite the fact that ManU was moving the ball at will, they had some signs that it might not be a perfect day. In the early moments of the match, it became obvious that Vidic was struggling with a calf injury.

Still United pressed on. Wayne Rooney became the first Red Devil to get on the score sheet for the new season with a 12th minute goal resulting from near effortless build up, 0-1 to United. Nani was in the mix as well, but unfortunately for United he didn't have his finishing touch during this one. He skied at least two golden chances over the cross bar.

Then it all looked to come crashing down for United, and their new goal keeper was completely responsible. De Gea looked wide eyed in the 37th as Chris Brunt sent in a cross to Shane Long, who in turn sent a shot back across goal. It looked like De Gea had it, but he dove late and right over the top of the ball. The back of the net rippled, and we went to half time tied at 1-1.

Things got worse for United after half time, as both Vidic and Rio Ferdinand subbed off with injuries. They joined Patrice Evra and Rafael on the list of injured United defenders. De Gea continued to look weak, not moving his feet and looking timid on balls in the air.

United got the break they needed late though. In the 81st minute, big summer signing Ashley Young put a low cross into the six, and Reid accidentally deflected it into his own goal, giving the Red Devils a 1-2 win.

While United didn't go the way of the rest of the big four with opening day draws, Fergie now has a lot on his plate with a shaky keeper and a beat-up defense. This could be interesting.

MLS/LA Galaxy Sign Robbie Keane

This rumor had been coming down the pipe for a few days, but now all parties have confirmed: former EPL striker Robbie Keane has signed with the LA Galaxy. The deal was completed before the MLS transfer window closed.

It's a two year deal worth upward of 9.75 million US. Tottenham may get as much as 4.7 million for him.

Keane has also been the Captain of the Ireland National Team. Keane has spoken of wanting to play in MLS before, and the Whitecaps pursued him heavily at one point. Juan Pablo Angel has left for Chivas to make room for Keane on the LA DPs.

Mexico Match Blurb: Atlante vs. Queretaro

Ok, this one's going to be kind of short. This was the first time I've ever watched either of these two sides, so I'm not really familiar with the players and formations, etc.

Just as a match, it was fun to watch. There always seems to be goals in these Primera Division matches. There was quite a bit of back and forth, though it's safe to say that Queretaro had the better chances. You could also see why both of these clubs might struggle at times, a lack of consistency on both ends of the pitch. I think this affected Atlante more throughout the match.

Queretaro got three goals from Bueno to account for it's scoring in the win. Maldonado equalized at 1-1 in the second half, but lack of defense killed them in the end as Queretaro scored the final two goals. The effort keeps them in touch with the top part of the table, while Atlante stays mired at the bottom in the Apertura. Fun one to watch though, plenty of chances and plenty of goals.

EPL: Liverpool vs. Sunderland

Well I guess Sunderland missed the memo on how great Liverpool is supposed to be this year.

Of course, I got the memo, and this result aside, I do think the Reds are gonna be tough all year, and I fully expect them to be in contention for the Champions League Spots. Unfortunately, King Kenny's side didn't get the start they hoped for this weekend. Not that Sunderland played a wonderful match, but Liverpool failed to put them away, and Sunderland took the only chance they needed to get out of Anfield with a point.

It started out promising enough for the Reds. In the 4th minute, Luis Suarez went down in the box under a bit of a push from Kieran Richardson, who appeared to be the last man. The referee awarded a PK, but instead of sending Richardson off for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity, he issued the defender a yellow. King Kenny was furious, but apparently the referee's thought process was that Suarez was moving away from goal so the incident only merited the yellow. Suarez subsequently skied the PK way over the bar, and the score remained 0-0.

However, neither Suarez nor Liverpool were going to let the miss keep them down long. In the 12th minute, Charlie Adam sent a beautiful free kick into the box, and Suarez headed it past the keeper to make it 1-0 to Liverpool.

The Reds fashioned several more chances prior the to the break. Charlie Adam absolutely nailed a shot from about 30 that just managed to stick to the keeper's glove. Then shortly before the half, Stewart Downing sent a total cracker off the cross bar, and we went to the half at 1-0.

Liverpool had a hard time finding their mojo in the second half though. The fluid passing game fell by the wayside, and Sunderland realized they were still in the match. They got their break almost out of thin air in the 57th minute when Sebastian Larsson found himself on the end of an Elmohamady cross. The Swedish midfielder hit an awesome volley toward the top corner, and Reina had no chance. The goal equalized the match at 1-1.

Down the stretch the match gradually fell apart for both sides. It degenerated into a stop/start match with many fouls and yellows flying all over. In the end, neither team managed anymore great chances, and the match finished at 1-1.

Disappointing for Liverpool, but a great result for Sunderland to start the season.

EPL: Wigan vs. Norwich City

Out of all the matches I had slated to watch this weekend, I was really most interested in seeing this one. Mostly because I wanted to get my first look at the Canaries back in the EPL.

If Norwich was going to start their new campaign on the road, they would have been hard pressed to find a better opponent than Wigan. Going into the final weekend last season, Wigan were in the bottom 3, and just barely managed to escape relegation. During the off season, they sold N'zogbia, arguably their best player, so you'll forgive Norwich in thinking they might have a shot at DW Stadium.

Things didn't look good in the early going for the Canaries though. Less than a minute into the match David Fox put in a nasty tackle on Di Santo to earn the first yellow of the day. Things would get worse for Norwich as well, as Victor Moses, trying to step up with N'zogbia gone, really torched the Canary defense on several occasions. However, it was a dumb mistake that cost them the first goal. Norwich defender Ritchie de Laet was dispossessed by Di Santo in his own end. He tried to chase him back into the box, but committed a foul conceding a PK. Boyce knocked the spot kick home to make it 1-0 to Wigan.

Norwich responded well though. I mean Wigan is still Wigan, and you know you're going to get your chances. Norwich got one right before the half and capitalized on it. Wigan 'keeper Al Habsi spilled a ball that came into the 6, and Wes Hoolahan slammed the ball into the net to equalize 1-1 at half time.

Both sides had chances in the second half, and both teams looked like they wanted all three points. Unfortunately, neither side was able to muster any finishing. Wigan had the better chances, including a shot from Boyce that hit the post, but the match finished 1-1.

Norwich will probably settle for a draw, but honestly, despite the fact that they played a spirited match, I think they're going to need some help to stay up. Wigan will rue the dropped points at home to a newly promoted team, but hey, last year Blackpool beat them 4-0 on opening day. They should also be impressed with the play of Victor Moses, who was a spark plug all match long.

Mexican Match Thoughts: Morelia vs. Chivas de Guadalajara

I totally forgot to check my Soccer Score app this morning, so it came as a big but pleasant surprise that there was some live Mexico Apertura action tonight between Morelia and Chivas. It served as a nice appetizer for the main course of EPL tomorrow, and was a fantastic match to watch.

It was a match that could have, and really should have gone a different way than it did. In the end though, the quality won out.

In the early moments, Chivas had the lion's share of possession, and Morelia looked like they might still be shaking off the cobwebs of last week's late loss to Monterrey. The Goats created many chances early, but could not convert, either shooting balls into the stands or making easy saves.

After about 25 minutes though, Morelia finally showed up, and showed up big. They forced some chances in on Michel in goal for Chivas, and that finally got them some confidence. The match really opened up with both sides going up and down the pitch, but neither could convert anything and the half ended at 0-0.

In the second half, Morelia looked like they might try a possession game for a few minutes, but soon enough the match opened back up and the sparks started to fly. Morelia made their first big mistake in the 50th minute. Chivas was up on a counter and sent a rather harmless looking cross into the 18. Defender Yasser Anwar Corona Delgado went to clear, but it deflected off the outside of his leg and into the net for an own goal. Chivas led 0-1.

The mistake didn't keep Morelia down long though, as they pressed on with their attack. Their persistence paid off just a few minutes later. In the 52nd minute, Manso took a beautiful back heel pass in the Chivas 18 and banged it home far post for the equalizer. A gorgeous goal, and Michel didn't have a chance.

Then Chivas started to implode. They got hit with two pretty blatant red cards. The first came in the 56th minute when Magallon got the wrath of the ref for some studs up action. Then in the 70th Araujo made it even worse with a red for flying reckless tackle. It was 11 versus 9 for Morelia.

However, not only could Morelia not capitalize on the situation, they gave up another goal. Gallardo made a totally unmarked run into the Morelia 6 and just barely tapped a goal past the keeper to make it 1-2 to Chivas.

Morelia had several chances late, including several corners and free kicks, but they managed to screw every one of them up. More often than not, they didn't even trouble the Chivas goal. Chivas did dodge a bullet when a handball in the box went uncalled, but the ball came from his own teammate and was headed out of the box. Apparently that was enough to convince the ref to avoid handing Morelia a totally undeserved draw.

Mexico Match Thoughts: Estudiantes Tecos vs. Tigres

The last match I had on the DVR to watch from last weekend was the Mexican Primera Division clash between Estudiantes and Tigres. I don't know how rabid footy fans live without a DVR. I really don't. So much soccer, so little time.

Right from the opening kick off you could tell that Tigres was the better side, they certainly looked it. They just came out and said, "This is our ball, come and get it." For their part, Estudiantes seemed to be quite content to defend. For all Tigres' possession, they really didn't manufacture a ton of chances. One of the few they did get came in the 6th minute, when Garces got a shot off at close range, only to see it nabbed by Martinez in goal. Again in the 40th minute, they had a rather long spell of possession in the Estudiantes penalty area, but couldn't manufacture a shot.

Estudiantes never did rally much possession or chances. Their only decent chance of the half, and maybe the match, came in the 22nd minute when Gomez had a shot that was saved rather easily. We went to the half time break tied at 0-0.

The second half was rather like the first. Tigres had the ball and Estudiantes was defending. However, Tigres seemed desperate to get more shots and turn up the heat a bit on the Estudiantes back line. They finally broke through in the 62nd minute when their keeper triggered a counter off an Estudiantes free kick. Tigres worked into crossing position, sent it in, and Isreal Sabdi Jimenez Nanez headed it into the back of the net to give Tigres a 0-1 advantage.

After the goal, Estudiantes settled for a handful of off target shots from Gomez. They never really threatened and Tigres took a well deserved win, 0-1.

Reports Put Cesc in Barca Colors.

I don't usually blog about transfer news until an official announcement is made, but this one looks to be done. Reports coming out of London, Sky Sports in particular, are saying that the deal sending Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona is done. The deal is rumored to be worth at least 48.5 million dollars (US).

Supposedly Fabregas is in Spain today taking a medical. Speculation is saying he may be announced tomorrow and travel to Madrid for Spanish Supercup on Sunday vs Real Madrid.

Arsene Wenger has not commented, but Fabregas is not in the squad for The Gunners' opener at Newcastle this weekend.

Freddy Adu Joins the Philadelphia Union

Earlier this week, rumors surfaced that Freddy Adu would once again sign with MLS and join Chivas USA. Well, turns out the rumors were half true. Today Adu did in fact join MLS, but with the Union instead. MLS did not announce the terms, but did confirm that Adu is not a DP.

The move reunites Adu with Peter Nowak, who coached him at DC United. Adu also made 11 appearances for Real Salt Lake before leaving for Benfica. Adu failed to get minutes in Europe, but made strides last year with a Turkish second division team. He played for the USA in the Gold Cup, and was also called by Klinsmann to face Mexico, but he did not dress for that match.

I like Freddy, and I hope he does well, but it's also another instance of MLS paying big bucks to a name player who couldn't cut it in Europe. As Brian Dunseth wondered on Twitter, how can MLS justify that in the eyes of several of it's veteran players?

RSL's Luis Gil Wins MLS Goal Of The Week

Congratulations to RSL's Luis Gil who not only picked up his first ever MLS goal vs the Red Bulls last week, but was also named the winner of this week's MLS Goal of the Week. Gil had 44% of the vote, while Brian "Leg-Breaker" Mullan finished second with 20%.

This is the second GOTW for RSL this season as Jean Alexandre got the honor in week 12.

Montreal Impact Name Their MLS Coach.

Late last week, the expansion Montreal Impact unveiled their new LOGO. This week they continued to make strides by announcing their new coach for their MLS debut season in 2012.

The Impact have hired former USA assistant Jesse Marsch. Marsch was an assistant under Bob Bradley and this will be his first job as head coach. He is also an original member of MLS, winning the first 3 MLS Cups with DC United and the Chicago Fire, respectively. He was also capped twice for the Men's National Team.

All in all, looks like a solid hire. Welcome to the league, Montreal!

Bundesliga Blurb: Bayern Munich vs, Borussia Monchengladbach

Ok, so I'm still a little new to this Bundesliga thing. I only get what ESPN 3 gives me. I did manage to take in two matches in week 1, and enjoyed them both.

This was my first chance to see Bayern outside of Champions League play. They were a pretty fun bunch to watch, and it looked like the atmosphere in the stadium was great. In the off-season, they signed 'keeper Manuel Neuer away from Schalke. Kind of pissed me off, but I doubted Schalke would be able to hold him.

Monchengladbach has not had the best of luck against Bayern. They had only won at Bayern once in Bundesliga history coming into this match. Last year Bayern edged into the Champions League play-in spot, while Gladbach needed a playoff to avoid relegation.

Munich, as predicted, had most of the possession, particularly in the first half. However, the longer the match wore on without quality chances, the more confident Gladbach got. Plus, lets face it, Gladbach's defense was doing a pretty awesome job.

Unfortunately for Munich, their defense didn't. A defensive blunder coupled with a blunder from their shiny new keeper cost them three points. Gladbach put a rather harmless looking ball into the Munich 18 in the 62nd minute. Boateng, he of ManCity fame, totally missed it and Neuer whiffed on his punch. Igor De Carmago was there to capitalize and gave Gladbach the 0-1 win.

All things being equal, not the best match I've ever seen, but entertaining. I hope to check out more Bundesliga throughout the season.

International Friendly: USA 1-1 Mexico.

I have to admit I didn't pay a ton of attention to this. I generally care about Friendlies as much as I care about the price of rice in China. However, with Klinsmann now the coach and some new faces to watch, I was interested in the outcome.

As an RSL supporter, I was particularly glad to see Kyle Beckerman get another chance at the National Team. Kyle played all 90 in his usual work-man like manner and earned high praise from his coach.

Mexico jumped out to the lead fairly early on. In the 15th minute, Oribe Peralta scored to put El Tri up 0-1. Luckily though, you could just tell from the attitude of the team that there wasn't going to be a repeat of the Gold Cup Final.

Klinsmann added several subs in the second half, and the MLSers did a great job against El Tri. So, why wasn't Brek Shea on the Gold Cup Squad? Why didn't Robbie Rogers play? Dude torched us at the RioT a couple weeks back. Shea found Rogers in the area in the 75th minute and Robbie scored the open goal to tie at 1-1, which was the FT result, thanks to some sloppy officiating and some late heroics from the Mexican 'keeper on Shea.

All in all...not a perfect performance, but an improvement for sure. Hopefully some good reason for USA fans to be optimistic.

London Riots Put Premier League Matches in Jeopardy

Yesterday the English FA announced that the friendly match between England and Holland was cancelled due to the rioting and violence in London. Some Carling Cup matches were canceled as well.

Now it seems that the opening round of Premier League Fixtures in London this weekend might be cancelled as well. As per a joint statement from the Premier League and The Football League:

“The Premier League and Football League are saddened by the recent incidents of civil unrest and the effect it is having on local communities. We are in on-going discussions with our London-based clubs, the Metropolitan Police and statutory authorities in regard to the staging of the coming weekend’s fixtures in the capital.

The Metropolitan Police has conveyed to us the dynamic nature of the current situation and with that in mind all parties will review the situation on Thursday and make a further public statement at that time.

With the information currently available to us there is no reason to think any matches outside of London will be affected.

We are conscious of the need to keep fans informed of any developments and will, of course, keep them as up-to-date as possible through club, league and media channels.”

The three fixtures in question are:
Fulham vs. Aston Villa
QPR vs. Bolton
Tottenham vs. Everton

This would certainly be a bad development, but the authorities and folks in London have more important things to look after right now. Hopefully they'll get it under control. Stay tuned to the EPL official website (link in the side bar) for more info.

England Friendly Match Called Off.

The English FA announced this morning that this week's International Friendly between England and The Netherlands has been called off due to the violence in London. The riots continued for a third straight night, and have spread beyond Tottenham, where they had originated.

The FA and the London Metropolitan Police said under the circumstances they could not guarantee the safety of the players and fans at the game.

This match isn't the first casualty of the London Riots. Carling Cup matches at West Ham, Charlton, Crystal Palace, and Bristol City had already been canceled.

Mexico Match Thoughts: Monterrey vs. Morelia

In one of my earlier entries I explained that I was really trying to expand my footy horizons this year. Part of that is going to be paying a little closer attention to the Mexican league. I watched a few matches last season, but since my Spanish is more than rusty, I never paid really close attention unless the it was Cruz Azul or Monterrey, who wound up playing RSL in CONCACAF.

However, the more I've watched the more I understand, and hey, it's footy, so I'm really looking forward to taking in some more matches from south of the border this year. The first of these was Monterrey vs. Morelia.

One thing was crystal clear from the get go. Monterrey was the better side in all facets of the game. I mean hey, I saw these guys play live and beat RSL at home. Even Cruz Azul didn't manage that, so I have much respect for the CONCACAF Champs. They nearly grabbed the advantage early as well. Cardozo slotted home a goal in the 8th minute, but he was ruled offside. Replays were a little questionable, but we moved on. Offside would trouble Monterrey for most of the evening, as Cardozo and Humberto Suazo couldn't get their runs timed right.

Monterrey had a ton of possession in the first half, but really didn't have a lot of good, quality chances. In the 35th minute, they literally set up camp in the Morelia 18, but couldn't trigger a shot. Right before the half Suazo managed a nice looking strike, but it sailed just wide, ending the half at 0-0.

The second half was more of the same, except a little slower for most of it. Morelia looked desperate to claw into the match, but they had a hard time wrestling the ball away from Monterrey. They never really tested Orozco in goal.

Monterrey finally broke it open late, when Suazo helped his team capitalize on a Morelia turnover in the 84th minute. He slipped in, onside this time, and scored to make it 1-0 to Monterrey. Carreno added another in the 90th minute to ice it, the full time result being 2-0.

All in all a pretty fun match to watch and a hard earned win for Monterrey.

Community Shield 2011: Manchester City vs. Manchester United

This year's FA Community Shield pitted Man City (FA Cup Winners) against Man United (Premier League Champions). Often this match has the feel of a friendly to it, not the feel of a regular season match or the intensity of a Cup Final. Well, adding the Manchester Derby to it upped the intensity this year quite a bit.

Last year about this time, City were in the process of closing down a major spending spree over the summer transfer window. Going into the new EPL season, they were a trendy pick as a dark horse to take the title from Chelsea. Well, we know how that turned out. Sir Alex compared the blue side of Manchester to "Noisy Neighbors," United took the league, and only the fact that City prioritized the FA Cup at the end kept them from going without any trophies to show for their funding. So both sides have something to prove. City wants to show that they're legit contenders, not just an all-star team, and United wants to show that they're still top dog.

If you were to look at the score line on this match, it might seem like a tale of two halves, but that wouldn't be quite true. United dominated for the most of the match. It was a very lively and chippy match, with 5 yellows handed out in the first half alone. However, as so often happens in soccer, United didn't capitalize on their work and chances and it bit them in the ass.

In the 38th minute, City capitalized on some of their only good possession of the first half. David Silva put a free kick into the area, and the United Defense plus De Gea just kind of stood ball watching as Lescott came in and flipped it into the net to make it 1-0. City added one more before the half, when Dzeko bombed a shot in past De Gea from distance to make it 2-0, and end both the first half and a rocky spell for the new United 'keeper.

Coming out of half time, you could tell United wasn't interested in conceding the shield to City at the 2-0 score line. In the 51st minute, Smalling got on the end of an Ashley Young free kick and flicked it past Joe Hart to make it 2-1. Then just a few minutes later Cleverley, Rooney, and Nani tore apart the City defense and earned the equalizer scored by Nani. 2-2.

Things looked to be headed to penalties, but City screwed themselves in the 94th minute. Rooney hit a clearance out of the United box, but Vincent Kompany totally misread it at the back. A hustling Nani stormed onto it, juked Hart out of his boots, and calmly slotted home the game winner, 2-3 to United. It was a bad blunder by Kompany and a great hustle play by Nani.

In the end, I thought United played the better match and deserved the result. However, De Gea looked a little rocky in goal. After all, he is only 20. We'll see how that goes through the EPL season.

Match Thoughts: Real Salt Lake vs. New York Red Bulls

No doubt coming into this one that RSL needed all three points against a tough Red Bulls side. After losing 0-2 to Columbus and 2-0 to Sporting KC, there were a few fans ready to hit the panic button. I wasn't quite one of them, but had we gone down to the Red Bulls last night, I would have thought about it.

Instead, Real dominated the match. The energy in the guys was evident from the opening whistle. I don't know what buttons Jason pushed with the team after the KC loss, but they were the right ones. For the first time since the CONCACAF Champions League, I saw the typical RSL swagger really return last night.

NY really didn't have much, if anything, for us. RSL survived the the first ten minutes (whew) and climbed on top in the 13th minute. Captain Kyle Beckerman put a nice corner into the box and Frank Rost and the rest of Red Bulls stood around and watched Nat Borchers head it in for his second tally of the year and give RSL the 1-0 lead.

The rest of the first half, indeed the match, was pretty much all RSL. RSL had the possession and the only NY player who looked like he cared was Henry. In the 44th minute, Kyle picked off a poor ball from NY's defense, and passed it over to Luis Gil who knocked it in from 25 yards for his first ever MLS goal. So glad I was there. The Gil Golazo put RSL 2-0 at the half.

NY never really looked like they were going to climb back into it. They did force Rimando into 1 save, but the back line for RSL, including Schuler, was solid against Agudelo and Henry all night. I wasn't really impressed with Agudelo, he whined more than he played tonight.

RSL got the final goal of the match in the 77th minute when Sabo slotted home a PK after Roy Miller was whistled for a handball in the box. Full time result 3-0 to RSL.

I also don't wanna hear about how the Red Bulls were tired after their London trip. NY and MLS chose to be in that "tournament." If you want to win REAL silverware, then put your league matches first.

Bundesliga Blurb: Hertha Berlin vs. FC Nurnberg

Okay, I usually follow EPL, Serie A, and MLS. I really want to try and diversify and watch more Bundesliga and La Liga this season, especially the Bundesliga. However, we don't get Gol TV, so I'm pretty much stuck watching whatever matches I can get on ESPN3. Better than nothing I guess.

Last night I took in Hertha Berlin and FC Nurnberg from the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Hertha was just promoted at the end of last year, while Nurnberg just missed out on Europe. I was really impressed by the atmosphere in Berlin, the supporters packed the stadium to the rafters for their club, along with 7000 Nurnberg fans who made the trip.

Unfortunately, the match didn't quite live up to the atmosphere in this one. Nurnberg was clearly on the front foot for most of the match. However, they really could have taken better advantage of the fact that the Berlin defense was in quite a bit of disarray. Ultimately, most of this rather chippy match (5 yellows) was played in the midfield.

Nurnberg finally got the goal in the 80th minute when Pekhart took a cross from Mendler and slotted it past the Berlin keeper to make it 0-1, which was the final. Berlin never managed an official shot on goal, and Nurnberg certainly deserved all the points.

On a side note, it's AWESOME to have European season getting back underway.

Dynamo Rookie Forward Bruin Out 4-6 Weeks

MLSsoccer.com is reporting some rather disappointing news for Houston Dynamo fans. Rookie forward Will Bruin will miss the next 4-6 weeks after undergoing knee surgery on Tuesday.

I got to see Bruin live when Houston played RSL, and I like what I see in the kid. Hopefully this will be just a bump in the road for the former Rookie of the Year candidate.

Bruin holds the Dynamo record for starts by a rookie with 20.

Head over to http://www.mlssoccer.com for more details.

CONCACAF Champions League Prelim: Real Esteli vs. Toronto FC

I didn't blog the opening match of this two-legged affair last week in Toronto, but it was a decent enough match. TFC was sparked by two goals from Plata, but Kocic bungled a ball in the box late that gave the Nicaraguan side life with an away goal. TFC took the win 2-1 at BMO.

Since then, the revolving door that has been TFC's locker room has kept spinning. Today they dealt Maicon Santos to FC Dallas for Eric Avila. Maybe all MLS teams should just totally change their rosters every few weeks, yeah?

At any rate, tonight TFC traveled to Nicaragua to take on Esteli on their home turf. The turf was butt ugly. The grass, I should say. The pitch was bumpy, patchy, wet, uneven, and in dire need of a visit from a lawn mower. Real Esteli counted on this helping them out, and I really thought it might.

The first half was pretty ugly. Both teams had trouble stringing passes together. Yes, the pitch looked to be giving TFC some issues, but Esteli wasn't doing much either. Toronto finally drew first blood in the 37th minute, when Ryan Johnson took a ball outside the top of the area and absolutely ripped it into the back of the net to give the Reds a 0-1 lead. It looked like that would hold into half time, but in the 45th minute Andy Iro got hit with a handball in the box to give Real Esteli a PK. Rosas converted and we went to half time tied at 1-1.

However, any fight in Esteli was quickly snuffed out right after half time. In the 47th minute the Nicaraguan keeper kicked an idiotic ball softly out right to Johnson. The Jamaican international took advantage and slotted it past the bewildered keeper to make it 1-2 TFC. Neither side really threatened much throughout the second half, and TFC took the win by the 1-2 margin.

The Reds now advance to group C, where they will get to take on PUMAS, one of the Mexican champion sides, and perhaps FC Dallas.

All I'm going to say about RSL vs. Columbus.

Yup I was there in my usual seat. I watched the Crew kick our asses all over our home field. Gaven and Heineman get two easy goals in 10 minutes, and that's all she wrote.

Give credit to the Crew, they came in and kicked our asses after we kicked theirs in Champions League.

Clean-sheeted by the backup keeper.

Ouch.
