I actually wasn't going to watch any soccer tonight. Weird, I know. I had a long day at work, I'm VERY frustrated with a lot of things right now, and I knew if I tried to watch I wouldn't enjoy it as usual. Then I saw the MLS midweek match was a late start, and as I haven't any MLS for a couple of weeks, I thought I'd give it a shot.
This match was very important in terms of the playoff picture. Both Chivas and Portland are on the outside looking in, but just barely. Portland would leap frog the Goats with a win in this one.
Knowing this, Portland came out on fire, and left Chivas in the dust. Robin Fraser had two use two first half subs as his players were dropping like flies. The Timbers had a number of good chances, but Kennedy was a wall in goal for Chivas. Finally late in the half Brunner got his head on a corner and scored, putting Portland up 1-0.
Still, Chivas knew they would have chances. After all, Portland has the second worst defense in the conference. The Goats put Perkins under pressure throughout the second half, but they just couldn't get it done. They had one shining chance though. Right at the end of stoppage time, the ball fell in the 6 for Courtois. Perkins was on the wrong post, and all the Frenchman had to do was tap it in. Unfortunately, he tried to switch feet and inexplicably hit the ball wide, sealing his team's defeat in heart-breaking fashion.
Ouch.
