Freddy Adu Joins the Philadelphia Union

Earlier this week, rumors surfaced that Freddy Adu would once again sign with MLS and join Chivas USA. Well, turns out the rumors were half true. Today Adu did in fact join MLS, but with the Union instead. MLS did not announce the terms, but did confirm that Adu is not a DP.

The move reunites Adu with Peter Nowak, who coached him at DC United. Adu also made 11 appearances for Real Salt Lake before leaving for Benfica. Adu failed to get minutes in Europe, but made strides last year with a Turkish second division team. He played for the USA in the Gold Cup, and was also called by Klinsmann to face Mexico, but he did not dress for that match.

I like Freddy, and I hope he does well, but it's also another instance of MLS paying big bucks to a name player who couldn't cut it in Europe. As Brian Dunseth wondered on Twitter, how can MLS justify that in the eyes of several of it's veteran players?
