Montreal's Nelson Rivas has been suspended for this headbutt on Antoine Hoppenot
It's been a good news/bad news week for the Montreal Impact. The bad news was expected. The good news was kind of expected, but still comes as a relief for the club and their supporters.
First the bad news. Defender Nelson Rivas has been suspended for a total of three games for the above headbutt on the Union's Antoine Hoppenot. The second half incident resulted in a broken nose for the Union man. Rivas will get an automatic 1 match ban for the red card, and the disciplinary committee added on an additional 2 matches. Of course he was also fined the regular "undisclosed amount."
In better news for the Impact, DP striker Marco Di Vaio has been cleared of charges related to match fixing in Italy. He missed the Union match while in his native country facing a hearing on those counts. Had he been found guilty, he would have been unable to play in any professional league, including MLS. However, as coach Jesse Marsch expected, he was found innocent and has returned to the club. He will be available for selection when the Impact travel to take on the New England Revolution this weekend.
