Match Thoughts: Chivas USA vs. DC United.

So I actually took in an MLS match live for the first time in a couple of weeks. Too bad only one of the teams showed up. Really they both should have as both Chivas and DC United are fighting right in the thick of the hunt for the final playoff spots in MLS.

This game was over in the first 15 minutes. Chivas never really did threaten, and their defense was all over the place throughout the entire match. Very uncharacteristic for them indeed. I'm sure Robin Fraser wasn't very happy. Charlie Davies put United ahead in the 11th minute after taking a beautiful pass from Pontius and hitting the back of the net to make it 0-1. Kennedy's defense left him totally exposed, and it wouldn't be the last time.

Just 4 minutes later Davies got his second of the night. Zemanski had a horrid clearance for the Goats, and the rest of their defense just stood there and watched as CD9 completed his brace. It was 0-2 to United. Davies had another chance in the 40th when he was left totally unmarked, but hit the shot wide. It was 0-2 to DC at the half.

Chivas tried to step it up in the second half but it really didn't work. They never really got anything but half chances. Every time DC got the ball they slowed the game way down, and who could blame them? In the 66th minute Davies completed his hat trick, slotting home another goal after another nice pass from Pontius. It was all over, 0-3 to United.

However it would get worse for Chivas. Just a minute later there was a nasty collision between Lopes and Pontius. It looked innocent enough as far as intent, but Lopes was shown the red card. Pontius had to be stretchered off the field. I hope he's ok, he had a great match. Down a man, Chivas couldn't muster anything and the match concluded at the 0-3 score line. Three big points for DC United.
