Match Thoughts: Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Real Salt Lake

Well, is it time to go back to the drawing board for RSL? One thing I know: they have to get it together and stop putting themsleves in these horrible positions with red cards and early conceded goals. It's pretty frustrating to watch, I can't imagine how frustrating it is for the players and coaches.

RSL had a number of factors going against them for this match. First, it was a match that was taking place during an international break, so they were missing a number of key players, including Kyle Beckerman, Will Johnson, and Alvaro Saborio. We have the stupid Vancouver vs. Man City friendly to thank for that. Plus, Fabian Espindola was out with yellow cards. Finally, Coach Kreis had to watch from the press box after dealing with illness from food poisoning.

I'm sure Coach K would say no excuses though. The first half was pretty even-stevens until the 43rd minute when Collen Warner was hit with a red card for handball in the box. I'm not going to recite handball rules or bitch about the ref. I thought it was pretty harsh to give a red, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, Camilo smacked home the PK to give Vancouver the 1-0 lead at the half.

The second half wasn't much better for 10 man RSL. In the 53rd minute, Vancouver earned another PK for a tackle that we'll just say was on the edge of the area. I have seen these calls go both ways. No complaining about the ref. RSL just put themselves in a bad position again. So Camilo notched his second PK of the night to make it 2-0. The Whitecaps added a third and final goal in the 88th by Khalfan to make the final score to make it 3-0.

Ouch
