Vancouver to host Manchester City this July.

Another big name English side will be playing some matches in MLS land this summer. Fox Soccer is reporting that the Vancouver Whitecaps will host Manchester City at Empire Field on July 18, 2011. This is part of that whole "World Football Challenge" thing.

The Whitecaps will truck in a temporary grass pitch for the match. I'm sure City won't want to risk any of their reserves on the turf up there. You know the regulars probably won't play.

Coup for the 'Caps. I like to see these big name sides come to MLS, but I don't think we should have sacrificed Super Liga for it. The only way our teams are going to really improve on the international scene is to play meaningful, competitive matches against international squads at full strength. Our venue for this is CONCACAF Champions League and Super Liga. Not friendlies against reserve squads from Europe.

Oh, and these teams are still too scared to play Real Salt Lake. Just sayin.
