Ok, with the first day's Gold Cup action complete, back to some thoughts on MLS. Last night I picked the FC Dallas vs New England match to watch live. I've watched quite a bit of Dallas, not so much of New England. Now I remember why. Remember a few weeks back when the Revs got the kit sponsor and signed Feilhaber and life was good? Neither do they.
Honestly the match wasn't all that enjoyable. If you're looking to catch a match on the Match Day Live archive in between Gold Cup matches, well, skip this one. The Revs looked ok early, Lekic tested Hartman early on in the 10th minute, and they played some decent central defense, shutting down some Dallas scoring chances. They couldn't really get any good looks though. Boggs took a shot from midfield in the 26th, and Joseph took another long shot that Hartman saved in the 27th, but that really was all the Revs could muster.
Dallas had about 67 percent of the first half possession and started to convert it into chances late in the first half. Castillo and Alexander both had decent looks go off target, then Brek Shea showed up. He forced a save out of Reis in the 38th, and then hit just wide from the angle as the half closed. 0-0 at the break, but Dallas had been the better team.
Dallas picked up where they left off to end the first half and the Revs just looked overmatched. Alexander had a shot blocked in the 65th, then shortly after Reis came up with a save on Castillo. Shea also shot high in the 68th, then it all came crashing down on the Revs, who had already thrown a couple of defensive subs in, playing for a 0-0 draw. Castillo got Chavez the ball on the right angle in the 69th, and he slipped it by Reis near post to give Dallas the 1-0 advantage. The Revs never threatened again, and Dallas went on to win by that margin.
Congrats to Kevin Hartman, who earned his 100th career clean sheet in MLS. Nice job from a great keeper. Dallas keeps up at the top of the West, and New England looks horrible. I'm ultimately wondering if the best thing wouldn't be to blow that team up and start over.
