It's really taken me some time and some thought to try to put this one in some perspective. What a frustrating game to witness. It's been pretty frustrating at Rio Tinto lately, but this is a tough patch for RSL, dealing with a couple of significant injuries and players out on international duty.
DC looked a little better than I thought they would coming out, and they created a few chances. They had one goal called back for offside. That seemed to wake RSL up a little bit, but not quite enough.
Still it seemed like RSL's luck might have turned a bit. They were awarded a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Fabian Espindola made a great one and give the Claret and Cobalt a 1-0 lead that they were able to hold until the break.
Right before the second half kick, I looked at my Buddy Rick and said, "we better get another goal before CD9 checks in." Those words proved prophetic.
RSL never got that second goal. Davies checked in and looked dangerous right off the bat. Dude is fast on TV, he's faster in person. Anyway, he hit the deck in the penalty area in the 85th minute. It was obvious to everybody in the stadium that it was dive, except for referee Terry Vaughn. Terry Vaughn, the latest idiot MLS zebra to step off the short bus and cuck up a match. Anyway, he gave Davies the PK. You know CD9 isn't gonna miss a PK. Nicky guessed right and ALMOST got it. Still, it went in, and we were tied at 1-1, which was the final.
I'm not pissed at Charlie. He did his job. I'm pissed at Terry Vaughn, and the fact that MLS seems to have no trouble with the fact that it's officials are consistently influencing the results of matches. Oh well, what else is new? RSL needed that second goal, then it wouldn't have mattered.
