Big news out of MLS's Eastern Conference this afternoon. The Philadelphia Union have announced that GK and team captain Faryd Mondragon will depart the club. Mondragon, who started for MLS in the all star game last year, will be returning to Colombia and his original club, Deportivo Cali. He cites family reasons for his departure.
Mondragon was the number one 'keeper in Philly last season before breaking his finger against Real Salt Lake. He did return before the end of the season and started for the Union in the MLS playoffs. He finished 2nd in 'keeper of the year voting and posted seven clean sheets.
The Union will look to up and coming 'keeper Zac MacMath. He's a very highly rated prospect and should still do well in goal. However, the loss of Mondragon will surely be felt.
